As a currently practicing physician, I communicate with patients on a daily basis. Times of illness are both confusing and daunting to all of us, regardless of our level of medical or biological knowledge. It is also the time when we are most vulnerable and any assistance we can get tends to be much appreciated. Miscommunications between medical professionals and patients are a common cause of problems in both hospital and primary care settings. Physicians and nurses, who often have to take care of dozens of patients every day, usually lack the time to get into the specifics of their patients’ illnesses and treatments.
As science and technology keep going forward, it is becoming increasingly difficult even for experts in individual fields to keep up. For others, it becomes an impossible task. I am fully aware of my own lack of understanding of most fields outside of medicine – whether it’s physics, engineering, law, finance, history, sociology, geology – I am basically clueless. Moreover, there are many very specific medical fields in which I feel absolutely incompetent. Thankfully, there are experts in all those fields who can help.
This is, hopefully, where this blog will come in handy. I am going to try uploading posts explaining the basics of common medical conditions and procedures in a way that will be helpful and easy to understand. It is my sincere hope that most readers will benefit from the information provided and that it helps facilitate communication between patients and healthcare providers.
Please note, however, that this blog is not a substitute for medical exams. If you suspect you may be suffering from a medical condition, make an appointment with your doctor or go to the nearest emergency department.
